Purple Reins Thigh Spreader Bar Review
My Verdict
Imagine you died and went to sex toy heaven. There would be toys lined up along the walls like the Hitachi Magic Wand, the Sybian, a plethora of Fleshlights, and the nJoy Pure Wand to name a few. Now imagine you died and went to sex toy hell… the Purple Reins Thigh Spreader Bar would be there to greet you at the door. It’s underwhelming and quite useless to be polite. I hate to sound so harsh, but my experience was quite sub-par.

About The Purple Reins Thigh Spreader Bar
The Purple Reins Thigh Spreader Bar is an extremely simplistic toy. It is a one-piece construction that consists of thigh cuffs and a 12 inch metal bar covered in a purple nylon fabric. The metal bar connecting the thigh cuffs has a good sturdiness to it and a decent heft to it as well. The thigh cuffs have a light amount of foam padding along the inside of them roughly a 1/4” inch thick. They also use Velcro fastenings to ensure the toy stays secure and doesn’t move around (though, spoiler alert: it does anyways). Toys like this are typically great for restraining a partner and preventing them from closing their legs, keeping all of their intimate bits exposed for you to do whatever you’d like to them. Spreader bars often pair really well with handcuffs and blindfolds to make sure your submissive is in your full control.

Cons

- ❌Scratchy Velcro
- ❌Metal bar is too short to be fully effective
- ❌Not made for bigger thighs

Personal Experience
My partner and I were thrilled to hear we’d be receiving the Purple Reins Thigh Spreader Bar. It wasn’t necessarily on our sex toy bucket list, but we are both fans of BDSM and have used spreader bars frequently in the past, so this felt like a great compact option for when we might want to get freaky on the fly!
Initial Impressions
When the package arrived we were thrilled, we both went into the kitchen, grabbed a pair of scissors, and carefully opened up the brown cardboard box it was delivered in. Inside what we found could only be described as the Purple Reins Thigh Spreader Bar…and a plastic bag. That was it. Fair enough, I like it when things are straightforward and to the point. Plus, I was reducing my carbon footprint by not throwing out more unwanted packaging. So maybe the “no box, no instructions, just toy” packaging was actually a good thing. The bar itself actually has a much more substantial weight to it than either of us originally thought it would. It feels very sturdy and has no give to it whatsoever. The thigh cuffs, however, are very flexible, have sewn in foam padding for added comfort, and use a Velcro closure system along the outside to make adjustability a breeze. I was actually very impressed with the strength of the Velcro on the cuffs. I am a strong believer that buckles are usually best, because Velcro tends to lose its strength over time and oftentimes doesn’t stay secure when more force is applied during more intense settings. But, the Velcro on the this spreader bar was actually extremely durable and never came undone during any of our testing. In Use
Everything felt promising! I was extremely hopeful that this toy would make its way into our sex toy rotation. Maybe not for regular use, but at least to be used for a kinky quickie due to its ease of use and convenience! My partner decided she wanted to put the toy to use during foreplay first. She laid on her back and I helped her strap the cuffs around her thighs. I grabbed our Le Wand Massager and began using it on her as I pushed on the spreader bar, forcing her knees close to her chest. Things seemed to be going well for the first few minutes until my partner, who was admittedly enjoying herself, began squirming and trying to close her legs from the intensity of the vibrator. Unfortunately, the short width of the spreader bar made it extremely easy for her to deny me access to her lovely lady bits. After some time for her to cool down, we started right back up where we left off. This time, as she was getting closer to orgasm, she decided she wanted to straighten her legs along the bed. This proved to be a mistake because almost immediately the cuffs began shifting down past her knees and rendered the Spreader Bar utterly useless. We tried readjusting and retightening but unless she was perfectly still it seemed that the cuffs would eventually migrate down her legs.Third Time Lucky?
We were disappointed, but we were determined the turn the ship around! We decided to press on and use it during sex. My partner wanted to keep things simple and give the toy its best chance at impressing us, so we chose to start our test in missionary. The Purple Reins Spreader Bar was actually quite nice when we first began using it during sex. The stiff metal bar allowed me to press against it, which allowed for much deeper penetration. We were pleasantly surprised about the turnaround! That was until I began feeling the sharp scratching and scraping of the thigh cuffs’ Velcro against my hips, ribs, and arms. It felt like there was no escape, I was a magnet to its Velcro claws. It wasn’t long before I was tapping out. Missionary was obviously a no-go, so we tried a few other positions but all had similar results. If the Velcro wasn’t tearing into my extremities, then it was sliding off my partners thighs and getting in the way. So, overall, we failed to be “wowed” by this product.Design
It is an extremely simplistic design, which is part of the appeal. However, I am a much bigger fan of leather compared to fabric. Leather often feels and looks more luxurious to me and is a breeze to clean, comparatively. The nylon fabric on the spreader bar doesn’t scream “posh” to me, and doesn’t have a nice soft feel that I like for toys that are touching mine or my partners body. The padding along the inside of the thigh cuffs is roughly 1/4 Inch thick, which was adequate, but it just didn’t look the best. But, my partner had no complaints about comfortability. The padding itself is sewn on towards the middle of the cuff which resulted in the edges of the foam to lift up. This didn’t result in any performance issues, but it’s the details that separate average from greatness.
Ease of Use
This is the saving grace of the toy. As long as you can undo Velcro, you can use this toy. It's very intuitive. Granted, you probably won’t want to continue using it, but you can use it!
Quality
The spreader bar is, admittedly, sturdy and had a great weight to it. At no point did I feel like it was going to break or rip. It didn’t feel cheap and flimsy, it just looked like it. I would have liked some higher-quality materials to have been used, however. At the very least, it would have been nice if they had covered the exposed padding on the thigh cuff with a soft fabric material rather than just leaving it uncovered.
Price
$29.99 is a fair price for a sex toy. Would I recommend you spend your hard earned $30 on this? Absolutely not. You’d be better off tying your legs to a broom stick. But seriously, save your money and spend it on something that will stay in place and give you orgasms, not headaches.
Performance
My partner and I were unfortunately let down by the Purple Reins Spreader Bar. We were hoping to add a new toy to our rotation that could be used to spice up quickies, but through our testing I don’t believe the spreader bar will be getting any more action from us. We had too many issues with the toy slipping out of place and even issues with the Velcro scratching me during sex with my partner.
Packaging
The packaging for the spreader bar was nonexistent. I personally really enjoy when I buy a new toy and I get to take the time to unbox it and go through all the free little goodies added or check out any discount codes that may have been sent for future purchases. It’s like my own little Christmas morning! But this toy had none of that. Which, in fairness to the Purple Reins Spreader Bar, isn’t what you’re paying for. You’re paying $30 and getting the toy you purchased and nothing else… maybe I’m too spoiled by other brands? For the price point, sending just the toy in a plastic is totally understandable. But, in a perfect world, there would at least be a box with some hot pictures of people with unrealistic body standards doing some crazy sex positions for me to try and fail at. Is that too much to ask?
Materials and care
I hope you like a scrubbing, bc if this thing gets stained, that’s the only way you’re getting it out of the nylon fabric! I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, I prefer leather over fabric. Unless it’s machine washable, I don’t think sex toys should be made from any kind of fabric. It just seems like a great place for bacteria to harbor. Granted, it’s not like this toy is going inside anyone… but I sweat a lot during sex, and sometimes bodily fluids go in unsuspecting directions. In those instances, it’s always nice to have a toy that’s hassle-free to clean.
