We’ll start by explaining what it is, what to think of beforehand and lastly, we will dig in deep and give you the best self bondage ideas we’ve got. This is your ultimate self-bondage guide – let’s begin!

What is self bondage?

You’ve probably heard about bondage if you heard about BDSM.

It’s the B in BDSM and it is about restraining a sexual partner in different ways. In other words, self bondage is a solo adventure, that’s about restraining oneself.

It might sound complicated but we will go through some self bondage techniques so you can ease into self bondage.

Why do self bondage?

Self bondage is all about being creative and experimenting with your erotic restriction.

It’s a good way to explore your sexual desires and preferences, especially if you don’t have a partner and want to prepare yourself for the upcoming BDSM play.

It’s a good way to get to know your limits and how to challenge them.

You need to have in mind that safety is extra important when doing it solo (we will talk about it more below).

How to self-bondage?

There are different self-bondage techniques and restraining yourself can be done in a lot of different ways, it can be through handcuffs, ties, or other chastity products.

When most people think about restraint with rope ties, they think of
Shibari. Shibari is beautiful rope art that includes different tying techniques.

If you’re into humiliation, slave play, and/or punishment it’s easy to explore and combine self-bondage ideas with one or more of these.

It can also be a good idea when you’re in a long-distance relationship or if you enjoy roleplay. Then you can include a dominant through the phone that hands you tasks and challenges.

We’ll give you some self bondage instructions so you know exactly how to do it, but first, we need to go through how to practice self bondage safely.

Safety first – Self bondage instructions

It’s a big difference doing self bondage and bondage with a partner, here you only have yourself to let you out.

It’s a me, myself and I, kind of thing. We will go through the safety risks with bondage, how to choose the right gear, and ideas for an escape plan, which is a must.

We don’t want to be a mood killer, but you must be aware of the safety risks when doing bondage.

Rule number one, you should not do any kind of bondage that restrains the mouth, neck, or head.

Rule number two, always make sure you can fit two or three fingers between your body and the restraint.

Self Bondage Risks

Blood circulation – This is important when tightening something, no matter if it’s a rope, handcuffs or a chain. Make sure it’s not too tight. If you are a self bondage beginner you should start rather too loose than too tight and go tighter as you go.

Suffocation – We’ve already told you but don’t restrain your mouth/nose, neck, or head. This is a big risk of suffocation when doing this. We know that this can also be a fetisch some have, but don’t do it by yourself.

Tissues and nerve damage – This is something you need to think of no matter what kind of body part you are restraining, avoid tight ties, thin restraints that can dig in easily, and keep monitoring your skin for any signs of damage.

Dehydration – Make sure to drink before, during, and after your self bondage play (depending on how long time passes by). Don’t complete any self bondage ideas that include restraining yourself from drinking.

Falling over while being restraint – This can happen to anyone, and therefore, you should not tie your hands behind your back as if you fall forward, you will smash your face.

Warning! Do not try auto-erotic asphyxiation

Auto-erotic asphyxiation, for those of you who don’t know, involves restricting of oxygen to the brain.

It falls under the category of breath play, but it can easily become very dangerous and can lead to death. You should never experiment with breath play during solo bondage.

Safe self bondage gear

Some bondage you can easily do at home, but to be sure there are no safety risks we recommend you buy your gear at a trustworthy retailer. Some suggestions are Lovehoney, Intooxx and Shevibe.

Self bondage techniques for beginners

Okay, so let’s get into what you came here for, the self bondage ideas.

If you are a beginner it’s very important to ease yourself into it. Always have an easy way to free yourself, don’t restrain both legs and arms at the same time, etc. This is what we call – easy self bondage.

Cuffs

Handcuffs & Wrist and thigh cuffs – for most people, this is the first thing that comes into mind when thinking of sexual restraint.

Used for the wrists and are available with different kinds of locks and can be made out of different materials.

Use the cuffs on your ankles to restrain yourself to a chair while
using a remote controled sex toy.

How to tie up my hands self bondage?

Here is a video that can help you with how to tie the handcuff knot.

Get inspired, use it for either wrists or ankles, and make your self bondage ideas turn into reality.

Self bondage rope

Self bondage rope – here you can do different kinds of self bondage ties and explore the art of shibari. Shibari is not just about tying it’s also used to put pressure on pleasurable spots on your body. You can create your own rope harness too. Once again, be careful when doing it by yourself.

Use the self bondage rope to create a chest harness or bind your legs to the couch.

Plastic wrap

Plastic Wrap – is something almost everyone has at home and it’s easy to wrap around legs and easy to cut off. Don’t wrap around your head!

Use the plastic wrap to hinder you from movement or to secure a wand vibrator between your legs.

Bondage tape

Tape – Make sure to use special bondage tape, this doesn’t cause irritation and skin damage as regular tape does, this instead sticks to itself and not your skin.

Use it to hinder you from speech (don’t convert your nose or tie your hands during this). Or use it to tape yourself toward a chair or to attach something to yourself.

Nipple Clamps

Nipple Clamps – this is an easy way of doing self bondage, you can easily tighten them and loosen them without restraining any other part of your body.

Use them under your clothes while walking around in public. Or combine them with some sexy lingerie.

Self bondage techniques for the experienced

For self bondage experienced people you can think of taking the ones above to the next level. You can still be inspired by the recommended bondage techniques above and do self bondage ties, self bondage rope and self bondage hogtie. Below we will go through a bit more complex but useful self bondage techniques and some special techniques used for tying.

Anal Hook – This is just what it sounds like, a hook for the anus. The end is shaped like hook / a ball or something similar and inserted into your anus and the other end can be used to attach some other kind of bondage gear. It can be used to secure to other areas of your body.

Self bondage ties

You can use any kind of material that has some kind of length so you can wrap it around whatever you are going to restrain. A scarf, a towel, or a rope to restrain your body through a bondage tie. Make sure you practice before tying and make sure it is a material that you can cut through for safety reasons. You can use it for restraining your legs, wrists, or around your body.

Self bondage hogtie – This is when you restrain both your feet and hands behind the back. We don’t recommend you go full-on hogtie, especially when it comes to restraining your body behind yourself. When you are doing it solo always tie in front.

Crotch rope – It can be a bit difficult to figure out how to tie a crotch rope, but it’s a good way to restrain yourself without restraining movement in your wrists and feet, and great for solo public play. If you’re into chastity play this should be your go-to.

There are different ways to do it, first of all, you will need to have e sturdy rope. Then the easiest way is to first wrap it around your waist a few times, pull it down beneath the crotch and through the butt cheeks, and lastly tie it on the behind/or wrap it around your waist again to tie it in front of you.

The cinch noose tie

The cinch noose is a slip knot, it is a tie that you can easily loosen and tighten, therefore, it’s therefore, a good tie for self bondage. It can help you to restrain any body part you want but is especially good for wrists and ankles. Use it like a handcuff or restrain yourself towards a chair or any other piece of furniture.

1. Do two loops and place the end underneath the middle rope.
2. Wrap the end around everything, at least two rounds, more is OK too.
3. Place the end in the upper loop.
4. Tighten it!
5. Now you can loosen and tighten it as you want by pulling the rope piece on the left side.

Self bondage positions

It’s pretty much your only you and your fantasy that can limit the self bondage positions. It can be anything from:

  • Lying down on your back, stomach, or side
  • Sitting on your knees
  • Kneeling on a chair/coach or other self bondage furniture
  • Standing and tying yourself to something

We always recommend you use bondage gear bought from a known webshop, have a look at some of these tests to get inspired and find the gear you want and need.

Do your research and plan before hand!

This is not the time to be spontaneous, safety first! And that means doing your research beforehand. For example, if you want to try out self bondage hogtie then practice the tying before. Try tying first your legs and how to let them loose, and then try the hands separately, etc. Always try before in a way you are 100 % sure you will manage to free yourself. And read the product instructions so you know how your self bondage gear works.

Different locks

Magnetic lock

Electromagnet – We don’t recommend this for beginners because it can feel complicated and it is not the best lock to use by yourself. Once again, safety first!

Timer – A lock with a timer is perfect, then you know that it’s only a certain amount of time you will be locked in. We do recommend getting one in plastic, then you can in emergencies hit it to a hard surface so it breaks and you’ll be free.

Combination – Don’t rely on your mind here, if you panic or another stressful situation occurs you must have written it down. Also, it’s a good thing to give it out to someone you know too.

Padlock – A classic, but remember – always have spare keys, the more the merrier.

Escape plan

Always, always, always have an escape plan ready, the more the better. The best thing to start with is letting someone know what you’re up to, and maybe have them check in with you after a while. This might not always be so easy and in that case, it’s even more important that you’ve thought of your escape plans.

Other suggestions for escape plans are:

Iced key – have the key for your lock in ice, then you know it’s a time limit and it’s also easy to break if needed before. Make sure it can’t fall to somewhere where it’s difficult to reach.

Bult cutters / Scissors – Have them easy in hand, and make sure that even if you’re tied up you can use them in an emergency.
